Regular RSS channels deliver text, with optional thumbnail images for channel branding. But PodCasting is RSS with an audio-based twist.

Podcasts - Specialist RSS Content

Instead of just text, a podcast delivers audio files containing the equivalent of chat shows, news casts, music sessions and more. This puts the delivery on a much more personal footing, and when it is done well - as a great many are - PodCasts can rival regular commercial radio production.

PodCasts share their name with Apple’s ubiquituous iPod, but as the MP3 format is almost always used they can be played on any modern digital music device. The audio files are linked within regular RSS channel items, so most people start by finding PodCast channels that has content they like and then use software such as iPodder or PlayPod to simplify downloading it and moving it to an iPod. See www.ipodder.org for more information and many hundreds of Podcast channels across dozens of subjects.

Apple's iTunes, available for both the Mac and Windows, now supports podcasts, making it easy to find the podcasts you want and transfer them to your iPod. If you are an iPod user (and, frankly, we all should be) then there's no better way to get into podcasts.
