Over the years my design experience has covered many disciplines, from traditional print and pre-press, including commercial litho and specialist screenprint, to new media design and production from video to web.
Examples of type design include MacUser magazine's official display font from 1998-2001, while the Runtime Revolution identity shows logo and product identity work.
Finally, there's photography, and in particular QuickTime VR photography, an intriguing area which has a huge amount to offer.
The Comuta site needed to be compact yet choc full of rich imagery. The goal was to produce a site which felt more like a multimedia application, but without using plugins such as Flash. The end result managed to achieve all this very well.
It fitted the bill in other ways too, as the complete initial design and deployment - once the images were ready - took under eight hours.
The Played in Britain site was as much a consulting task as it was design and production work. This had to be taken from existing design ideas to finished site in a relatively short time to be ready for the Played in Britain book launch. The site owner - also the book's author - needed to be able to maintain and update the site, so some training was involved.
A forum was also made for the launch.
Minutemen is a showcase site created for an artist and 3D animator. It features a purposefully disturbing animation of hand illustrations on the home page, and includes a QuickTime showreel presenting some of her animation work on The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Captain Scarlett, and more.
The Purple Door Studio is the site of a talented ‘plein air’ artist. (For an explanation of ‘plein air’ see the site...) This acts as a set of online galleries for original pastel paintings and prints.
As the client and I were on different sides of the Atlantic ocean, the entire site design, from ideas to completion and its ongoing maintenance, was done through email. This proved surprisingly effective, although the wonderful original images were a big help.
The Unique Cards & Print site was a complete redesign for an existing site, and included creating a new PHP-based secure ordering system. After the redesign, the site project was then handed over to be maintained by the company.
QuickTime VR as well as sraight photography provides new ways of looking at and showing things, from everyday scenes to remote locations. Some samples can be found on the QuickTime VR page.
The Runtime Revolution identity involved creating the software name, visual identity and logo, splash screen, identity usage guidelines and more for a software authoring tool from a startup company based in Edinburgh.
The company adopted the product name as part of their identity, and logo usage guidelines were created both for the company and for those using the software.
The Local Tint blog identity design, a quick project done for fun for an independent-minded writer in Alabama
I've always enjoyed type design, and a number of my productions have seen reasonably widespread use. MacUser One was the magazine's official display typeface from 1998-2001, while Primary Sans has been used around the world.
On a more utilitarian note, the Shortcuts font, designed with Steve Caplin, provided symbols for his popular Photoshop books, and FormFont makes form box design as simple as - well, as A-B-C.
The Axio-UK site presents the Axio Hardpack bag range in a new site design scheduled for the start of the Alexandra Palace motorbike show. This is a purposefully slick, bright design aimed at the product's discerning, demanding audience which is also designed to do well in search engines.
The Danny-Tang.com site is for Danny Tang, a styling consultant offering personal styling, personal shopping and other fashion services. The client wanted a site which he could maintain himself, so the design and structure was made specifically easy to understand for someone new to web page construction.
